Optimist Award College Scholarship
The Sanibel - Captiva Optimist Club awarded a college scholarship to recently graduated high school senior Lauren Davis of Fort Myers. Lauren was selected from a large number of applications. Lauren plans to attend Stetson University in Deland, Florida.

The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village will close on Saturday August 7 for the remainder of the summer and into the fall. The museum will reopen in Wednesday, November 3.

Shell Crafting Every Monday
Every Monday between 10AM and 3PM, the Sanibel Community Association offers complimentary shell crafting. It's the perfect opportunity to transform your beach finds into anything you can imagine, or allow one of the Shell Crafters to help you with your creation. Shell crafting has been a long standing tradition at The Community House and is open to people of all ages. Instruction and materials are provided by the Sanibel Shell Crafters Club, a creative group of volunteers that helps support The Community House and its operation by creating and selling crafts on Monday and at the annual Shell Fair and Show help the first week in March. Doors are open throughout the day, and you are invited to join in at your leisure.

Sanibel Public Library Announced Computer Training
Beginning Monday, August 2, the Sanibel Public Library's technical staff are prepared to give you private computer instruction. Simply come be the Library and meet with one of the computer techs to set-up your 15 minute, one-on-one instruction period. This service is free of charge. Individual instruction is available each weed on Monday from 2-4:30PM and on Fridays, from 10AM-4PM by appointment.

Book Discussion Group to Meet
Readers are invited to discuss "Deaf Sentence" by David Lodge, the focus of the Wednesday August 25 book discussion meeting at the Sanibel Public Library. The meeting is free and open to the public. The discussion will begin at 2PM in the meeting room across from the elevator, Meeting Room 4. Eliot Sugerman will be leading the group's discussion of the book.

New Fall Hours for Library Kids
The Sanibel Public Library has revised its children's program schedule. The new times will go into effect September 1.
Monday is craft day at 3PM, for 3rd graders and older.
Tuesday at 10AM is Terrific Twos.
Wednesday at 11AM is Small Wonders birth to 12 months. 11:30AM is Tiny Tots 12 to 24 months.
Thursday at 10AM is Bookworms for three to five year olds, 3PM for K to 2nd graders and 4PM Read. Call and schedule a time to read to the dogs Rocky & Simon.

Shell Crafting for Kids
The Sanibel Community House will be hosting a Shell-Tac-Ular on Saturday, September 4, from 10-11AM. Shelling is open fro kids of all ages and skill levels.

Arthritis Water Classes at Sanibel Rec Center
A new program of Arthritis Foundation water exercise classes will be offered on Monday and Wednesday at the Sanibel Recreation Center from September 6 through October 13. The class is designed specifically for people with arthritis and other related diseases. Participants can work to improve their joint flexibility and reduce their pain and stiffness while supported by the water's buoyancy and resistance. City Of Sanibel Labor Day Holiday Schedule & Refuse Collection
Sanibel City Hall will be closed in observance of Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2010 and will resume regular office hours on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
Refuse, recycling and vegetation waste collection by Waste Pro scheduled for Labor Day will be one day later. Therefore, if your normal pick-up day is Monday, September 6, 2010, your waste will be picked up on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. The altered schedule will remain in place for the remainder of the week. The normal waste collection schedule will resume on Monday, September 13, 2010.
The Sanibel Recreation Center will be open Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2010 from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. All regular classes will be held. If you have any questions, please call the Recreation Center at 472-0345.

Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation Seeks Volunteers to Plant Mangrove Seedlings
As part of the on-going Community Restoration effort in Clam Bayou, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is seeking volunteers to plant red mangrove seedlings in the Bayou on the following dates:
September 10th and 11th (Friday and Saturday)
September 13th, 14th, 15th (Monday-Wednesday)
September 23rd and 24th, (Thursday and Friday)
September 27th and 28th (Monday and Tuesday)
October 8th and 9th (Friday and Saturday)
October 11th (Monday)
October 22nd (Friday)
October 25th, 26th and 27th (Monday-Wednesday)
October 29th and 30th (Friday and Saturday)
November 5th and 6th (Friday and Saturday)
November 8th-13th (Monday-Saturday)
Participants MUST be at least 16 years of age and MUST pre-register. Volunteers that can bring their own kayak or canoe are encouraged to do so.

BLOOD DRIVE -YOUR DONATION SERVES OUR COMMUNITY
On Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the City of Sanibel is sponsoring the Lee Memorial Blood Center's Bloodmobile at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road. Almost 40,000 Americans need blood transfusions each and every day. The Lee Memorial Health System needs blood to meet local area needs.
The Lee Memorial Blood Center's Bloodmobile regularly visits the Sanibel Recreation Center in conjunction with the City's "Fit-4-Life" initiative. 10K Race for F.I.S.H. on October 16th
F.I.S.H. has announced the date of the Second Annual 10K race which will take place on Sanibel on Saturday, October 16 starting at 7:30AM at the Sanibel Community House. F.I.S.H. of Sanibel, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization assisting Sanibel and Captiva islanders and visitors with a wide range of services. For more than 28 years it has been a "neighbor helping neighbors" organization offering free human services such as transportation for medical appointments, meal delivery, health equipment, food pantry and emergency financial assistance. Celebrate Sanibel This November
The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village along with the Committee of the Island will present the third annual Celebrate Sanibel event during the week of November 7 through the 12. Activities include special programs at "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge on Monday, SCCF of Tuesday & Wednesday, The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Wednesday, the historical museum, on Thursday morning, a program by Rusty Farst at BIG ARTS on Thursday evening and a beach lunch at Casa Ybel Resort at noon on Friday. The centerpiece is the annual island club/organization presentation to the public on Sunday, November 7 from noon to 3PM.
